Redland Neighbourhood Forum

Redland Green School, Redland Court Road, BS6 7EH 7pm to 9pm. This is an informal session open to anyone, where you can discuss local issues with your councillors, with police officers responsible for the local area etc. So whether its pavement parking, trees, play facilities for children, or clearing of footpaths in the snow – this is an opportunity to go and discuss what would make for a better neighbourhood and a stronger community.

Bristol pound and DIY streets

Our friends in Transition Montpelier are hosting a fantastic evening meeting. Speakers are;

Mark Burton from Bristol Uni on launching our own currency, right here in Bristol, and

Alex Allen from Sustrans on the low cost and no cost things we can do to improve our own streets.

It is at the Fairfield Resource Centre (what used to be Fairfield School) the Fairfield Road entrance, the KS2 support unit. BS6 5JL

Ecoshow walk connecting landscape and history

We are going on an all day walk on 2 October that will connect different bits of Bristol, and us, and ancient byeways, and streams, and history….  Redland, St Stephens, Redcliffe and Hartcliffe/Withywood. It is part of Bristol’s Ecoshow, which is a project to lighten Bristol’s footprint using arts practitioners. Email us if you want to join in. We will have a historian and a landscape person to guide us.

Carfree group for Bristol

Meeting at the Cornubia pub BS1 6EN (near Temple Meads Station) for Bristol’s new ‘carfree group’ convened by Steve Melia. European Cities do it so why can’t we? Carfree doesn’t mean you don’t have access to a car when you need it (hire, car club or taxi) it just means you don’t have to own, service, insure, and store one of the darn things. After all, we don’t ALL keep a cow just cos we drink milk, so why do we put up with squillions of stationary heaps of metal turning what could be livable streets into giant car parks.

Parking, Playing Out, Bristol Pound

Our next Susred meeting is Very topical and Very local. Everyone welcome. Bring a couple of quid if you can to help cover room hire costs. Friends Meeting House Hampton Road opposite Clyde Arms pub. 7.30 pm

We have;

Ciaran Mundy from Transition Montpelier updating us on the plans for the Bristol Pound

Clare Wilks from Westbury Park has been running a project called Changing Spaces (featured on the front cover of the current Redland and Westbury Park directory). Clare has turned one on street car parking space into a different kind of feature on three separate days, in order to find out what people think and how they respond. Its fascinating stuff.

And thirdly Adrian Davis who lives locally is coming along to tell us how, with the help of a neighbour, they have successfully  organised a ‘playing out’ project in their local streets of Monmouth Road and Monks Road. Thanks to the efforts of Amy and Alice (here’s their Ted X Bristol talk) this is now easy to do.

So see you at 7.30 pm on 19 oct at the Friends Meeting House – do tell friends and neighbours, email people, stick up notices etc etc

Visiting day at Community Farm

Susred is involved in the setting up of a ‘community supported agriculture’ project in Chew Magna. There is a fantastic opportunity on 26 June to spend a day on the farm, which is out at Chew Magna, and learn all about the plans. If you need convincing here is a lovely article by Clare Groom, who went on the last visit day. It is 11 acres of beautiful veg growing, overlooking Chew Valley Lake, and on the visit you will meet Phil Haughton, founder of the Better Food Company, and a main driving force behind the plans for the Community Farm. For more information or to book a place contact phil.haughton@btinternet.com

Happiness Lecture
