The owners of Heathrow airport are presenting their case for taking out an injunction against peaceful protesters concerned over damage caused by airport expansion. Whether you live on a flood plain or not, it is worth thinking about whether flooding could affect your home or business. Redland is on a hill and nowhere near the river, but recent rains have overwhelmed our Victorian drains, resulting in sewage flooding in to some basements with drastic consequences. It’s over nine years since Colin Campbell and Jean Laherrere wrote their Scientific American article ‘The end of cheap oil’ but little has been heard about these matters in the mainstream media. So a dramatic tale ‘a second to midnight’ with peak oil at its heart is unusual for Radio Four. Episode one was on July 13, and the second and final part is on July 20. If you haven’t yet seen these two films then they will be showing in Horfield, details here. The films are ‘The end of suburbia’ - US documentary about oil-dependant urban design and supply systems, and the trouble that lies ahead unless we plan now for peak oil, and ‘the power of community’ - documentary about how Cubans went very hungry when their oil supplies were cut off, and until they created their new system of urban agriculture. And there’s also a showing of our very own Wallace and Grommett in the vegetable growing community that could be a model for the future.

The Carbon Rationing Action Group held its first quarter meeting on 10 July to check how everyone is getting on with carbon counting. Eight members had all their counting up to date, and all were well on track for an annual figure well under the 4,500 kgs target.
