Thanks to an initiative by Andy Ross in Warwickshire, we can now transform all our messy attempts at ‘benchmarking’ our home energy use – all those handwritten calculations and complicated spreadheets will be a thing of the past, as we can do it through the CRAG web-based community. Financial news from Ford in America revealed that Ford lost £6.45 billion last year, an average of $4,380 on each vehicle sold. Perhaps this shows that companies that fail to plan for lower carbon lifestyles simply won’t survive.

M and S has announced its plan to be carbon neutral by 2012. Interviewed on Radio Four’s Today programme, Chief Executive Stuart Rose explained the reason very simply “I read the Stern Report. It’s frightening, we have no choice, we must make these changes.” The plan has been welcomed by Greenpeace, and unlike many gimmicks announced by big business, which amount to little more than window dressing, this plan aims to address all aspects of the store’s economic activities.
