How to prepare in case of flooding
Thursday, July 26th, 2007
Whether you live on a flood plain or not, it is worth thinking about whether flooding could affect your home or business. Redland is on a hill and nowhere near the river, but recent rains have overwhelmed our Victorian drains, resulting in sewage flooding in to some basements with drastic consequences. The Environment Agency has clear, practical instructions on how to be prepared for flooding so that damage is minimal. It’s worth remembering also that part of the reason for drains being overwhelmed is the loss of green spaces that drain water, loss of urban trees that help drainage, and loss of rainwater butts to collect rain from roofs now that we expect to use mains water and hosepipes to water our gardens. We can all help by putting rainwater butts for roofwater, keeping our gardens from being paved over, and campaigning for preserving, and new planting, of urban trees.
