Seventy local residents gave up their Saturday afternoon to come to our open day on 21 October. This featured information stalls on home energy, transport and recycling, focus groups to explore our hopes and frustrations, and an informative talk by Stephen Williams our local MP. We identified some immediate things we can do, and there was a real feeling of support for raising the profile of local action on climate change.
Here are some of the ideas.
- set standards for local domestic energy consumption with guidelines for reaching them - we’ve already begun this, and hope soon to have helpful information available on this site
- establish a local tool sharing system
- provide a directory of green suppliers
- foster car sharing in the community - a useful link for this is www.2carshare.com
- provide information about what happens to the items we recycle - the answers are at www.bristol-city.gov.uk. Go to waste and recycling and FAQs
- foster better recycling and understanding with our student residents - we’ve invited some to talk to us at one of our meetings
- raise climate change awareness issues through organising a car free day/street party
- push for things like better energy efficiency information at point of sale, a local reuse centre, a household recycling day once a month, and the establishment of a Transport Authority for Bristol
Stephen Williams our MP made these points:
- he does not support the expansion of Bristol Airport
- aircraft emissions should be included in the Kyoto Protocol
- Bristol should, like London, have its own Transport Authority
- Lagoons incorporated into the Severn Barrage are a strong contender for future energy supplies
- carbon allowances are likely to be introduced as part of the way we live in the future
